Counting in Japanese involves two distinct systems with different uses.

Sino-Japanese numbers (used for dates, phone numbers, and maths):

• 1 = ichi, 2 = ni, 3 = san, 4 = shi or yon, 5 = go
• 6 = roku, 7 = shichi or nana, 8 = hachi, 9 = kyuu or ku, 10 = juu

Native Japanese numbers (used for counting objects without specific counters):

• 1 = hitotsu, 2 = futatsu, 3 = mittsu, 4 = yottsu, 5 = itsutsu
• 6 = muttsu, 7 = nanatsu, 8 = yattsu, 9 = kokonotsu, 10 = too

Numbers 4, 7, and 9 have two readings because certain sounds are considered unlucky.

A private Japanese tutor in Basingstoke charges an average of £20/h per session.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• Your current level (complete beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
• The tutor's qualifications and experience (native speaker, certified instructor, university degree)
• Lesson format (remote, in-person, or hybrid)
• How often and how long (one-off lessons or regular packages)

Some teachers provide a free first lesson so you can test their teaching style.

Japanese differs greatly from English, yet its logic is consistent and learnable.

Key differences from English:

• Three writing systems: hiragana for native words, katakana for loanwords, and kanji for meaning-based characters
• Grammar structure: sentences follow Subject-Object-Verb order, not Subject-Verb-Object like English
• No articles or plurals: Japanese skips "the" and "a" entirely

The good news: Japanese pronunciation is straightforward, with only five vowel sounds and no complex consonant clusters.

Students rate their Japanese tutors in Basingstoke 5⭐ out of 5 on average.
