The foundation of music theory rests on 12 pitches that cycle infinitely up and down.

• The natural notes are A, B, C, D, E, F and G — seven letters that form the white keys on a piano.
• The black keys on a piano represent these five in-between pitches with two possible names each.
• A semitone is the smallest step in Western music — the distance from one key to the very next.

This 12-note cycle repeats identically whether you move up toward higher pitches or down toward lower ones.

Quick tip: memorise C-D-E-F-G-A-B first, then add the five sharps/flats in between.

Expect to pay approximately £35/h for a private sight-reading lesson in Bushey.

This rate can vary depending on several factors:

• Whether you need foundational basics or advanced sight-reading skills
• Your teacher's background — university-trained musicians may charge more
• How often you meet and for how long each time
• The format — online lessons, in-person at your home, or at the tutor's studio

Some teachers provide block-booking discounts that lower the per-lesson cost.

Many offer a no-obligation introductory session to ensure a good fit.

Reading music starts with understanding the staff — five horizontal lines that represent pitch.

• The treble clef (𝄞) marks higher-pitched notes and sits at the start of the top staff.
• Lower instruments like cello, bass guitar and trombone read primarily in bass clef.
• A semibreve (whole note) lasts four beats, a minim (half note) lasts two, and a crotchet (quarter note) lasts one.
• Treble lines spell E-G-B-D-F ("Every Good Boy Deserves Fun") while spaces spell F-A-C-E.

Practise reading a few notes at a time, then gradually add rhythm and dynamics.
