Every melody and chord you hear comes from just 12 different notes.

• These seven "letter" notes appear on every instrument and anchor the musical alphabet.
• Five accidentals fill the gaps: each can be named as a sharp (♯) or flat (♭) depending on context.
• Sharps raise a note by one semitone, while flats lower it by the same amount.

This 12-note cycle repeats identically whether you move up toward higher pitches or down toward lower ones.

Start with the white keys, then learn where the black keys slot in — that's your complete toolkit.

Reading music starts with understanding the staff — five horizontal lines that represent pitch.

• Most melodies, vocals and right-hand piano parts use the treble clef.
• Bass clef indicates the fourth line up is F — helpful for left-hand piano and bass instruments.
• Note shapes tell you how long to hold each sound: a filled oval is shorter than an open one.
• Treble lines spell E-G-B-D-F ("Every Good Boy Deserves Fun") while spaces spell F-A-C-E.

Consistent short sessions beat occasional long ones — aim for 10–15 minutes daily.
