Western music uses 12 distinct pitches that repeat across every octave.

• The natural notes are A, B, C, D, E, F and G — seven letters that form the white keys on a piano.
• Between certain natural notes sit five sharps or flats: A♯/B♭, C♯/D♭, D♯/E♭, F♯/G♭, and G♯/A♭.
• Sharps raise a note by one semitone, while flats lower it by the same amount.

After G♯/A♭, the pattern restarts at A, one octave higher or lower.

Start with the white keys, then learn where the black keys slot in — that's your complete toolkit.

The average price for a music reading lesson in Smallfield is around £15/h.

This rate can vary depending on several factors:

• The student's level — beginners, intermediate learners, or advanced musicians preparing for exams
• The tutor's qualifications and experience, including conservatoire training or teaching certifications
• Lesson length and frequency — weekly hour-long sessions versus shorter fortnightly meetings
• Whether you choose face-to-face tuition, video calls, or a hybrid approach

Many tutors offer discounted packages if you book multiple lessons upfront.

Begin by learning how the staff visually organises pitch from low to high.

• The treble clef (𝄞) marks higher-pitched notes and sits at the start of the top staff.
• The bass clef (𝄢) covers lower pitches and anchors the bottom staff in piano music.
• Note shapes tell you how long to hold each sound: a filled oval is shorter than an open one.
• Lines and spaces each represent a specific pitch, which you can memorise with mnemonics.

Consistent short sessions beat occasional long ones — aim for 10–15 minutes daily.
