Understanding music theory starts with its essential building blocks.

• Notation and rhythm: Learning to read notes on a stave, understand time signatures, and recognise rhythmic values is the first step.
• Notes and scales: Scales define the notes available in a key and are the basis for melodies and harmonies.
• Chords: Harmony explores how chords relate to each other within a key, shaping the mood of a piece.
• Intervals: Intervals underpin chord construction, melody writing, and aural training.

Once you understand these foundations, progress in both performance and composition accelerates significantly.

A private music theory lesson in St Andrews Scotland costs approximately £20/h.

The cost depends on:

• The grade you're working towards (from Grade 1 through to Grade 8)
• The teacher's expertise and background
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• The lesson format (online, at home, or at the tutor's)

Online lessons are often more affordable while remaining just as effective.

In music theory, the 1 3 5 rule describes how to build a triad from any major or minor scale.

• The root (1): The root is the starting note of the chord and gives it its name — for example, C in a C major chord.
• The middle note (3): The third note determines whether the chord is major (bright) or minor (dark), making it the most expressive note of the triad.
• The top note (5): It anchors the sound and gives the chord its sense of resolution and completeness.

Understanding the 1 3 5 rule opens the door to chord construction across any key or instrument.
