When it comes to your health and eating right, you need to know about nutrition. Fortunately, as an academic subject, nutrition can teach all about the benefits of certain foods, how they improve your health and wellbeing, and the science behind what makes them so beneficial.
Whether you're interested in studying nutrition as a university degree programme, learning about it for your own health, or studying it at school, here's why you should, the challenges you may face, what you can learn about it at school, and how private tutors can help you learn more effectively.
As we alluded to, this is an academic subject that looks at food in terms of its health benefits, nutritional information, and the science behind what makes it so good for you. When it comes to learning about nutrition, you can either study it for personal reasons or professional reasons.
You might consider learning about nutrition to improve your quality of life by spending time focusing on what you eat and what you need to eat to lead a healthier life. A healthy lifestyle comes from exercising and eating right so it can certainly help to know what's in your food and the benefits of eating it.
There are also professional reasons to study nutrition. If you'd like to learn about food and how it can work to help others, you'll want to study nutrition for a career as a nutritionist. Mostly, nutritionists can work in hospitals, gyms, schools, universities, and healthcare facilities.
However, we need to be clear that nutritionists and dietitians are different. Nutritionists work to promote healthy eating to lead a better life in people who are already in good health whereas dietitians will work with people who have medical conditions that will require a special diet as part of a cure or their treatment, for example.
We've mentioned that there's a difference between nutritionists and dietitians in terms of their jobs, but there's also a difference in terms of their legal status. As medical professionals, dietitians are regulated and cannot practise as such without proper accreditation. Sadly, the field of nutrition is not as well regulated, which means anyone can say they're a nutritionist with or without training.
This means that there are some bad actors out there sullying the good name of professional and experienced nutritionists. Fortunately, you can register on the UKVRN (UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists) and those who complete courses approved by the Association for Nutrition (AfN) can place themselves on the UKVRN. It's a good idea to make sure you're on this as those who aren't mightn't have been able to meet the standards and competencies outlined by the AfN.
In Belfast and Northern Ireland, students can study for a GCSE in Home Economics: Food and Nutrition and take lessons to learn more about food and the role it plays in our lives.
Students will learn about food and nutrition for good health, nutrition during the various stages of our lives, different types of nutrients, additives, water, health issues, and special diets such as vegetarianism and veganism.
They'll also study where food comes from, how to be an effective consumer, making choices when it comes to food, food safety, and food labelling.
While the GCSE isn't essential for those wanting to study nutrition later on at university or part of a degree programme, it can be a good idea to test whether or not it's a career path they'd like to pursue.
Whether you need help with your university degree course or are interested in learning more about nutrition for yourself, lessons with private tutors are an excellent option.
For one, the lessons will be adapted to you and how you like to learn. A tutor can offer quality teaching as each lesson is taught with a specific student in mind. Many teachers have to teach in a way that works for most of the students but can rarely teach in a way that would be ideal for each student as an individual.
This means that students needing help with their university course can learn the information they need to get better exams results and perform better on their academic course. Those learning for themselves could focus on the nutritional information of the food they tend to eat and work with their tutor to better understand what they eat and the best ways to eat more healthily, for example.
Lessons with tutors can also start at any level and you won't need to wait for the term to start. That means students with no experience in nutrition can start at any time of the year or pick up where they left off if they already have some experience with nutrition.
If you live in or around Belfast, you can find tutors based in the area on the Superprof website. There are plenty of experienced and qualified tutors for a wide variety of subjects including nutrition.
If you can't find any suitable tutors in the area and don't fancy travelling miles across Ireland for them, you can always broaden your search by looking for online tutors. As long as you have a webcam and a decent internet connection, you can enjoy tutoring from tutors all over the world and while online tutoring might have some drawbacks for hands-on subjects, it can be just as effective as face-to-face tutoring for academic subjects like nutrition, English, maths, science, etc.
If you're on a budget, group lessons are also a good choice as you can share the cost of each lesson with the other students on the course. This does mean that the tutor won't be able to fully adapt their course to you, but if all the students are of a similar level, this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
It's a good idea to do your research before you start looking for tutors and make a list of what you need out of your tutor. You can also check a tutor's profile, read the reviews left by their other students, and check to see if they offer the first lesson for free. This is a great way to try out several online and offline tutors' lessons for free before choosing the right one for you, your level, your budget, and how you like to learn.
