It's probably fair to say that most of us know that nutrition is important for our health. Our diet not only affects our weight, but it also affects our energy levels which can be detrimental in our professional and personal life.
However, it's not always the easiest thing in the world knowing which food is healthy and why so there are experts, either nutritionists or dieticians, who can help us to better understand the food we eat and the nutritional value it has.
With that in mind, let's look at why nutrition is important, the challenges we face when it comes to eating right, what we learn about it at school, and how private tuition from a professional nutritionist can help you to lead a healthy life.
As we mentioned, nutrition is directly linked to your health. If you want to be healthy, you need to exercise and eat right. However, that's easier said than done. A lot of companies will do their utmost to oversell just how healthy their products are or brush over the fact that their products mightn't be good for us at all.
You just have to look at the back of the packaging for the nutritional information and you'll see that some things being touted as healthy are probably not actually that good for your health. This doesn't mean that a lot of calories are necessarily bad for you. If you're training for a marathon, for example, you might be eating more calories than usual, the important thing is that your diet matches your lifestyle, which is where understanding nutrition comes in.
Nutrition is a science, which means that information can change over time and it can be hard to stay abreast of the latest developments. Of course, there's been a consensus on certain foods being healthy for years, but the amounts of these foods and exactly what our body requires is a fine balancing act. If you don't have the time to regularly study the field of nutrition and ensure you're working with the most up-to-date information, then having a professional nutritionist advise you is the next best thing.
If it was so easy to eat right, we'd all be doing it. Many of us don't have the time or knowledge to regularly eat healthy food. In some cases, our jobs keep us so busy and leave us so tired that when we get home from work, we don't want healthy food, we want something that tastes good and it can be difficult to override the desire for food that definitely isn't good for us.
Then there's the fact that it may seem that the whole world is against you. The worst food for us is often the cheapest, the easiest to get a hold of, the most tempting, or unhealthy food masquerading as something far healthier than it is.
Then there's the idea of keeping up with the field. You can only go off the most recent information, but you might be regularly eating something that you thought was healthy only to later discover that it's not as good for you as you thought. Nutritional information is regularly changing so to ensure you're eating right and living a healthy life, you need to regularly research what you're doing.
In school, there are only really two subjects where we'll learn about nutrition: biology and cooking and nutrition.
Biology teaches us about diet in the scientific sense; how nutrients are broken down and how they provide us with energy, how fat can lead to heart disease and strokes, etc. It's useful information to have, but it doesn't really teach about what we should and shouldn't be eating or how to live healthy lives.
Cooking and nutrition, on the other hand, does teach us quite about nutrition. However, at GCSE, this isn't a very popular subject and for a long time has been wrongly thought of as being a subject for less academic students. Cooking and nutrition, while not one of the best GCSEs to get you onto university courses, is one of the subjects at school that will definitely help you in later life and teach you things that you'll use in everyday life.
Students learn how to better understand where food comes from, how it can affect their weight, and the kind of nutrition they'll need to live healthy lives. if you're interested in cooking and nutrition, it's definitely a subject worth studying at GCSE, especially if you've been having problems with your weight or have any medical conditions that require you to understand nutrition.
If you've decided that you need to learn more about nutrition, then getting a professional nutritionist to help you is a great idea. To find nutritionists in Leicester or around Leicestershire, you just have to search for them on the Superprof website.
A nutritionist works with their clients to help them choose the right diet, teach them about the nutritional value of what they're eating, and help them change their diet if they're changing their lifestyle. This means you can get healthier, lose weight, be more productive at work, or have more energy in your everyday life.
When you search for nutritionists on the Superprof website, you can view their profile, see how much they charge, read reviews from their other clients, see what experience they have in the field, and contact them if you're interested in hiring them.
If none of the nutritionists or dietitians in Leicester or Leicestershire is to your liking, don't forget that you can also get support from a nutritionist online. You'll be working with them much in the same way as you would face-to-face but your communication will be by email and video conferencing over webcam. After all, your nutritionist doesn't need to be there while you're eating but rather give you advice and information about your diet, what you should be eating, what's good for your health, and what you should be looking for when buying food.
Remember that before you make any changes to your diet, especially if you have preexisting medical conditions, contact a doctor or dietitian. You can access these services for free on the NHS.
