Psychology is one of those rare subjects that fit the criteria of being both enjoyable to study, and a parent-pleaser.
It’s fun to study because there are endless possibilities where you take your studies. In one direction, you could explore the cognitive development of children and how their brain understands the world in the early stages of life.
In another direction, you could channel your inner Sherlock Holmes and put psychological puzzle pieces together to solve crimes and profile criminal behaviour.
Psychology is a parent-pleaser because it’s a field that’s currently enjoying a lot of growth, and we’re likely to see a high demand for psychologists in the coming years.
Why?
It’s no secret that there’s a mental health crisis going on, and this has been exacerbated - in no small part - due to the COVID-19 pandemic that first swept the world in 2020.
As a result, we need mental health professionals now more than ever.
We need people who understand the mind and can help us recover a sense of normalcy following years of pandemic-related struggles.
We also need people who are willing to research important issues such as the effects the pandemic has had on everything from children’s development to our ability to socialise at a distance.
If these aren’t compelling enough reasons, how about the fact that psychology is the playground of the aspiring mind-reader?
When you work with a tutor, you give yourself a greater chance of long term success in the subject.
If we all committed to self-study, relying only on textbooks and online resources to learn, then most of us would never become proficient in anything.
Self-teaching is 100% possible, and viable for many skills and subjects, but psychology is a field that demands a lot.
Without a tutor, every problem you encounter can seem like an intimidating mountain to climb. You could see it as free solo climbing: the rewards may be immense if you manage to go it all alone, but the level of difficulty is hard to understate.
When you hire a tutor, you have a lifeline.
They can provide you with the tools you need to climb each mountain; a rope, a sense of which foot and hand to put where, and motivational works to help you stick with it even in the most difficult moments.
Psychology is a science-based subject that requires logic, but without an open mind, you won’t get far.
Not only will you have to wrap your head around mind-bending topics, but you’ll also need to show a willingness to go back on your theories and change your mind when necessary.
There’s no room for rigidity in a subject like psychology.
Say you’re enrolled in a forensic psychology module at university and you’re tasked with coming up with a theory on why a criminal decided to commit a particular crime.
You can use all the logic in the world to get to an answer, and it may be right, but with the human mind, anything is possible. We can’t say with 100% certainty what the perpetrator was thinking before committing the crime, so there’s always room for interpretation and you may have to dig deeper to get to the bottom of the issue.
With the study of psychology, you can open many doors.
There’s the door to helping others as a mental health professional, the door to helping police catch criminals as a forensic scientist, and the door to better understanding childrens’ brains through as a developmental psychologist.
What’s more, psychology is a fascinating subject for simply indulging curiosity about the human mind.
