Find a science tutor near me in Thurso

The scientific method follows a clear sequence that scientists use to investigate questions.

• Observe: Spot something that sparks a question.
• Question: Turn your observation into a specific, testable question.
• Research: Find out what others already know about the topic.
• Form a hypothesis: Propose an explanation you can prove or disprove.
• Experiment: Carry out your experiment carefully and record results.
• Analyse: Look for patterns in your results.
• Conclusion: Share findings so others can repeat the test.

This cycle often repeats because new questions arise from each conclusion.

Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid and gas.

• Solid state: The particles cannot move freely, so solids keep their shape.
• Liquids: Atoms have more energy and move around within the substance.
• Gases: Particles spread far apart and move quickly in all directions.

Heating adds energy, making particles move faster and often changing state.

Energy transfer drives every change of state you observe in nature.
