The four open strings on a violin are G, D, A and E, arranged from thickest to thinnest.

• G string: This is the deepest string, located on the far left when holding the instrument.
• D string: This string bridges the bass and treble registers.
• A string: It sits just below the highest string and is tuned to 440 Hz in standard pitch.
• E string: The thinnest and highest string, capable of brilliant, singing tones.

Each string is tuned a perfect fifth above the one below it.

These four notes form the foundation of all violin technique.

Private violin tuition in Drumchapel typically costs £34/h per hour.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• Your current ability (Grade 1–8 or diploma level)
• The teacher's experience and qualifications (professional orchestra experience, ABRSM exams)
• Session duration and how often you meet (weekly, fortnightly or intensive blocks)
• The format (face-to-face or via video call)

Some tutors provide a free trial lesson so you can check compatibility.

Learning violin requires patience because good tone and intonation take time to develop.

• No frets: You rely on muscle memory and ear training rather than visual markers.
• Bowing technique: The angle, pressure and speed of the bow all affect tone quality.
• Posture and hold: Holding the violin under your chin while moving both hands independently feels unnatural at first.

Despite the challenges, progress is deeply rewarding once you hear your first clean melody.

Patience and the right guidance make the violin achievable for adults and children alike.
