The four open strings on a violin are G, D, A and E, arranged from thickest to thinnest.

• G string: This is the deepest string, located on the far left when holding the instrument.
• D string: The second-lowest string, often used for melodic passages.
• A string: It sits just below the highest string and is tuned to 440 Hz in standard pitch.
• E string: This steel string produces the most projecting sound.

Each string is tuned a perfect fifth above the one below it.

These four notes form the foundation of all violin technique.

Private violin tuition in Harrow typically costs £32/h per hour.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• The student's level (beginner, intermediate or advanced)
• The teacher's experience and qualifications (professional orchestra experience, ABRSM exams)
• Session duration and how often you meet (30, 45 or 60 minutes)
• How lessons are delivered (face-to-face or via video call)

Many teachers offer discounted packages if you book multiple lessons upfront.

Learning violin requires patience because good tone and intonation take time to develop.

• No frets: Unlike a guitar, the violin has no frets, so you must place your fingers exactly right to play in tune.
• Bowing technique: The angle, pressure and speed of the bow all affect tone quality.
• Posture and hold: Correct posture prevents tension and injury over the long term.

Despite the challenges, progress is deeply rewarding once you hear your first clean melody.

Patience and the right guidance make the violin achievable for adults and children alike.
