About Merryn
Hiya! I’m Merryn. I enjoy helping students like me feel more confident in their subjects, especially when it comes to essays, which I know can feel completely alien if they’re not explained in a way that suits you.
My academic interests fall within the realm of social and political science, particularly in areas like media, film interpretation, multiculturalism and feminism. These interests shape the way I teach: I like helping students understand not just what they’re studying, but why it matters and how it connects to the world around them.
My goal is to make exams feel less intimidating by giving students clear structures, personalised essay formulas and a calm, supportive space to practise. Whether a student is anxious about writing, struggling with coursework or simply wants to improve their grades, I love helping them feel capable, organised and in control.

My approach to tutoring focuses on exam technique and clear essay‑writing formulas, personalised to each student’s writing style. I aim to build confidence through simple, repeatable structures, and I tailor every session to the student’s needs — which is why I usually request a sample of previous work before our first lesson.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes (though I’m flexible if a student needs longer) and includes explanation, guided practice and personalised feedback. I also provide a written summary of our session and identified strengths and weaknesses afterwards and can set additional tailored learning tasks.
I tutor GCSE English, Art and Drama, as well as A‑level English Language and Film Studies. My experience includes achieving full‑mark coursework in English Language, Film and my EPQ, alongside grade 8/9 GCSE results. This helps me support students with their own study skills, coursework and written projects. Lessons are especially suitable for secondary school and sixth‑form students who struggle with exam nerves, want to strengthen exam technique, or need a more organised approach to writing.
