I have taught, what I feel is, a wide variety of abilities, and therefore, I tend to try and gauge the level the student is at by assessing a mixture of their ability and confidence in the subject. I do not prescribe a set syllabus as I find helping the student on what they don't understand, rather than powering on in a different direction to school mostly confuses and overwhelms them.
