About Sophia
I’m a Year 12 student at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, going into Upper Sixth, studying Philosophy, Economics, and Theology – all subjects that have strengthened my logical thinking and mathematical skills. I achieved a high grade in GCSE Maths and genuinely enjoyed the subject. I’ve always been told I’d make a great teacher, and friends often say my explanations are clear, engaging, and genuinely help them understand. As the eldest of three sisters, I’ve supported them in all subjects, especially maths, which has taught me how to be patient, encouraging, and adaptable. Beyond academics, I’m a keen rower and love outdoor sports like skiing and hiking. I’ve played the violin and piano from a young age, and I hold a black belt in Choi Kwang Do, where I also worked as a youth instructor. That experience instilled in me discipline, leadership, and a passion for helping others grow. I want to tutor maths to help students not only improve their grades, but truly understand and feel confident with the subject.

As a maths tutor for students from Primary to GCSE level, my approach focuses on building deep understanding and confidence in the student through an engaging and student-led method. I tailor my teaching based on each individual and will adapt based on how they learn best. I incorporate enquiry-based learning alongside techniques that get students to verbalise their thinking. This helps them develop problem-solving skills and communicate their reasoning clearly, which is especially useful for exams. Though I’m a first-time tutor, I’ve spent years teaching and supporting my younger sisters in maths — especially as the eldest of three. That experience has shaped my patient, clear, and encouraging teaching style. Each lesson is 60 minutes long, typically structured in three parts: 1. A quick retrieval of the content from the previous lesson to ensure they have grasped the concept. 2. Introduction of new content 3. Practice time, where students work through problems while I support and challenge them to think critically. In terms of qualifications, I achieved an A in GCSE Maths, and scored 109/110 in my KS3 SATs. I understand how maths can feel frustrating or confusing at times, so I focus on breaking down complex ideas and helping students see patterns and logic. My lessons are perfect for: • Primary school students who need support or want to deepen their understanding. • KS3 students building skills and confidence. • GCSE students preparing for exams, aiming to meet or exceed target grades.
