About Derek
My mother once told me that, when I was a baby, the first two things she realized I loved were music and applesauce. My father gave me a book to learn piano when I was five years old; he believed the most important skill in music is drive and practice. In high school I was giving paid private low brass lessons to adults, and have been teaching and performing ever since - teaching adults and fellow students of all instruments while still in HS, being in active practice groups while studying Tuba Performance in college, and spending a career as one of the most trusted performers and private/group music instructors in the United States Marine Corps.
Give me a shot. We will find *your* path forward together!

Compassion, Collaboration, and Patience are the name of the game for me. I pride myself on being able to break anything down to whatever level you're at and helping you build from there at your own pace.
Want to join a Community Band? I'll help you get up to speed.
High School/College performance exams coming? Let's crush 'em.
Level Zero in music? No worries, let's get started.
Level Divide-by-Zero? We'll figure it out together!
Wherever you are right now is perfect. I started tuba halfway through my undergrad and ended up one of go-to performers in the USMC. DO NOT JUDGE yourself or your path. All you need is drive, practice, and someone to coach you the way you need as a learner.
