About Tomás
I'm a longtime ESL teacher from Brazil, where I learned English on my own mostly playing video games and watching TV shows. I would then move on to study formal English and fall in love with linguistics and the study of human cognition and epistemology, which I chose to study in the University of São Paulo. Unfortunately my academic career was cut short by political instabilities in Brazil, and I chose to come to Canada in search of a new life. My mission is to enlighten all of my students with the immensely transformative power of knowledge and critical perspective about their own place in the world, giving them tools to improve their realities and better understand the realities of others, empowering them to act constructively over their own milieus.

Using my knowledge of 15-years as an ESL teacher, I deliver customized lessons based on the Communicative Approach and CELTA methodology for language learners that rely on interpreting and reproducing authentic materials and using targeted grammar exercises to work with universal linguistic features that allow the language to come through naturally. Familiar with TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC exam prep. Canadian students will find me well versed with the curriculum of grades 9 and up, working to consolidate skill to successfully read, write, communicate and properly interpret the English language, while emphasizing the development of critical thinking and literacy. Available for test prep, tutoring specific points in your curriculum.
