About Harold

Teaching piano is, for me, a blend of craft, connection, and communication. I see the piano not just as an instrument, but as a tool for self-expression and discovery. My teaching style is rooted in the belief that every student’s journey is different, and it’s my role to meet them where they are—whether that means starting with basic hand coordination or refining a Chopin nocturne. I provide a strong technical foundation, guiding students through proper finger technique, posture, reading fluency, rhythm development, and hand independence. But equally, I emphasize listening, emotional connection, and interpretation. We explore how music feels and what it means—how to shape a melody, express contrast, and make a piece truly one’s own. I incorporate music theory in a way that’s practical and empowering, helping students recognize patterns and create their own ideas. One experience that stands out was helping a shy 11-year-old student write their own lullaby after studying chord inversions and intervals. That piece became a turning point—it gave them confidence not only in music but in themselves. I also encourage students to reflect on their growth, set realistic practice goals, and develop resilience through performance preparation and feedback. Whether we’re studying classical pieces, modern songs, or original compositions, I aim to create a learning environment that is supportive, enriching, and inspiring. For me, piano teaching is about more than notes—it’s about unlocking the potential in each student and showing them that their musical voice matters.

My teaching philosophy centers on making piano lessons a personalized and enjoyable experience that nurtures both technical proficiency and artistic expression. I start by assessing each student’s current abilities, goals, and musical preferences to craft lessons that are both challenging and engaging. Fundamental skills such as finger independence, hand coordination, rhythmic accuracy, and sight-reading are emphasized early on to build a solid technical foundation.

I always connect these fundamentals to repertoire that motivates students, whether it’s classical sonatas, contemporary pop songs, jazz improvisations, or film music. Music theory and ear training are woven into lessons naturally, enhancing students’ comprehension and musicality. I strongly encourage improvisation and composition, which allow students to develop creativity and personal style.

Technology is a vital component of my teaching; I incorporate recording devices, digital practice tools, and metronomes to provide immediate feedback and track progress. I also guide students in developing performance skills, stage presence, and managing performance anxiety, preparing them for live playing situations. Creating a nurturing and positive atmosphere is paramount, where students feel comfortable exploring, making mistakes, and celebrating every milestone. Whether the aim is to perform professionally, prepare for exams, or simply enjoy playing at home, my lessons aim to inspire confidence, passion, and a lifelong connection to music.
