Lydia - Peckham Rye - Composition

Methodology

Learn something new and rewarding today!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Cello, Trumpet, Piano and Music Theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am a graduate of the Royal College of Music, where I completed an undergraduate honors degree in performance. This year I completed a Masters in music at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, with a core unit in instrumental teaching.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30 an hour for lessons. I will also teach in 45 minute lessons if this is preferable, (often more suitable for younger children) at £25 and 30 minute lessons at £20.
There is an extra fee to travel to you.

- Where do you teach?

In Ladywell, Lewisham and Honor Oak Park, and at pupils locations across London.
Nearby towns are; Lewisham, Blackheath, Greenwich, Bromley, Lee, New Cross, Deptford, West Dulwich, East Dulwich, Honor Oak, Forest Hill, Crystal Palace, Camberwell, Peckham, Central London, West London, South London, South East London, Victoria, Kensington, Chelsea, Sloane Square, Knightsbridge, Notting Hill, Holborn.

- When are you available?

My lesson days/times are flexible. I teach during the week after-school and evenings, and on Saturdays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

From age 5 upwards, all are welcome!
Complete beginner to advanced grade 8 players.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

ABRSM and GSMD Grade and diploma examinations.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Music is a fantastic means through which you can enrich and expand your life. Learning an instrument takes dedication and determination, but can reward you in so many invaluable ways, and allow you to make some new and exciting friendships along the way :)

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a cello and trumpet tutor for Wandsworth Schools Music, and Lewisham Music service, giving one to one and large group lessons during the week at primary schools in London and at their saturday schools

I teach small group and individual cello lessons for Bromley Youth Music Trust, and conduct and direct youth string ensemble, 'Teen Strings,' where young players practice and perform popular arrangements for string ensemble.

I have my own private teaching business, in Ladywell, Brockley, Lewisham, and in Honor Oak Park, where pupils ranging in age, from 5 to 35, come to me to learn and develop. If they choose to, many of my students undertake ABRSM grade exams, all of whom have thus far achieved Merit and above, and I encourage all of my pupils to perform in fun, informal concerts with each other, and join local ensembles.

Whilst at the Royal College I worked with the RCM Sparks, which is the College's Youth Music Programme run by the Woodhouse Centre. This involved taking part in composition masterclasses and orchestral string concerts attended by hundreds of children from local boroughs.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I went to the Junior Royal Academy of Music, studying with Erica Simpson and Ben Davies.
For my Bachelor of Music degree in Performance, I attended the Royal College of Music, studying with Leonid Gorokov and Thomas Carroll.
I recently completed my masters degree in Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, studying with Natalia Pavlutskya and Alex Ivashkin.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Orpheus Foundation Orchestra, the Orion Orchestra, The Situation Opera Orchestra and the London Arts Orchestra.
I teach for Wandsworth School's Music Centre and at Wimbledon High School.
I form half of cello/violin duo, The London Duo.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

One of my students is a young 5 year old beginner, with an 1/8th size cello! He is learning so much more about how to communicate, listen and learn and suits the cello very much. Another is 22 and used to learn the piano and so knows how to read music which is a real advantage. She is doing very well and is a pleasure to work with. I give music theory lessons to a gentleman wishing to progress his compositional techniques and I teach two siblings who come to me for alternate cello and trumpet lessons!

Lydia invests time with her pupils, often playing in parts with them to develop musicianship. Her engaging lessons, support understanding and encourage practice, so her pupils progress really well. From absolute beginners to Grade 8, we know many cellists who have excelled with Lydia.
