Maggie - Fulham - Violin

Methodology

I have over 20 years of teaching experience working with all ages and levels specialising in classical violin/viola. My teaching philosophy is to incorporate a balanced musical education with positive instruction and enthusiasm for learning.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

My principal instrument is violin but I also teach viola as well as music theory. I teach all genres but focus on classical repertoire through the Suzuki method, and all levels of ABRM.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Masters Degree - MMus - Violin, London College of Music, UK
Diploma of Fellowship - FLCM - Violin, London College of Music, UK
Suzuki Teacher Certification - Violin, Beaver Creek, USA
Masters Degree - MMus - Violin, Boise State University, USA
Bachelors Degree - BSOF - Violin, Indiana University, USA

- How much do you charge?

I charge £40 per hour (£30 per half hour) for lessons in my home in Fulham with the option to travel to students' homes for an additional fee.

- Where do you teach?

I teach out of my home studio in Fulham (a 10 minute walk from Fulham Broadway station and Parsons Green tube station)

- When are you available?

Please call or email me to discuss available lesson days and times.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and levels from beginners to advanced.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I use the ABRSM exams as an aid to my teaching and to give my students a sense of achievement. I also use the Suzuki method to measure a student's success and technique building. I also prepare students for auditions and entrance exams.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Learning an instrument is much like learning a language, it requires a lot of work and consistency in practice. I create a support system for students and parents in my lessons to give the pupil positive encouragement and reinforcement from parents that are able to help a child progress in their music education. I am passionate about teaching and go the extra mile in order to see students succeed through their lessons while also having fun learning. I am committed to my students, their parents and their musical journey.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been playing and performing violin for over 28 years and have taught students since I was a teenager to a variety of ages and levels; those who are starting violin for the first time to students preparing for competitions and exams. I have also coached student orchestras, chamber ensembles and taught general music in a classroom setting. I have held a private studio for the past 10 years.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I am DBS certified

- Where and with whom did you train?

I most recently studied with Dermot Crehan at the London College of Music obtaining a Masters Degree in violin performance (MMus). Prior to my work in the UK I studied with Craig Purdy as a graduate assistant at Boise State University where I achieved a Masters Degree in violin performance (MMus). At Indiana University I studied with Frederico Agostini where I achieved my Bachelors Degree in Violin Performance and Sociology (BSOF). Other teachers I have studied under are Cyrus Forough at Carnegie Mellon University and Paula Stern of the Boise Philharmonic.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students vary in ages and levels and all have benefited in their violin lessons of fun, focus and creative release. My students look forward to making music and playing violin, having the ability to create personal expression whilst learning about music and theory. I think my students enjoy how I structure lessons with the focus being on a piece of my choosing and one they want to learn (within level of difficulty) while incorporating music theory and history in fun ways that are relevant to the pieces, teaching them much more than just how to play a song. I have students who take lessons for the pure enjoyment of the violin and some that are preparing for exams; whatever the motivation to learn from my students I will do my best to fulfil.
