Marielle - Brighton - Music Theory

Methodology

I am a friendly and dynamic teacher with love of music at the heart of my teaching but I am not afraid to push my pupils. I try to teach in a way that leads my pupils to explore, take risks and develop their playing independently.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach flute, aural and theory lessons from beginner to post-grade 8 level, piano from beginner to grade 6 level and harp from beginner to grade 5.
I also coach chamber groups and prepare individuals for auditions such as school scholarships, music college, university and youth orchestra.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a post-graduate diploma specialising in flute from the Royal Academy of Music, London and a Bachelor of Music degree from Trinity College of Music, London. Prior to studying at music college I received distinction in grade 8 flute, harp and piano.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35 per hour, £17.50 per 30 minutes and will add a small additional charge to travel to pupil's homes which varies on distance, parking etc. Trial/consultation lessons are charged at the same rate of £35 per hour plus travel.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at my studio at home in Brighton and can also travel to pupil's homes within the area. Where possible, I encourage pupils to come to my studio as all my equipment such as my piano, music and technology that I need is set up there. I occasionally have access to a teaching space in the centre of Lewes if it is easier for pupils to learn there. Pupils come to me from West and East Sussex, Brighton and Hove and London.

- When are you available?

Lesson times are arranged with the individual and can be between the hours of 8am - 10pm, varying daily.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I thoroughly enjoy teaching all levels from beginner to post-grade 8 and children to adults. The youngest age I would suggest for starting flute would be 7 years old but this really depends on the size of the child - the flute can be a stretch for small hands but if this is the case, fife, recorder or piano is a good place to start.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I am experienced in preparing pupils for Preparatory - Diploma level practical exams for both Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity Guildhall exam boards. I also prepare pupils for their grade 5 theory exams and I can teach the 'Aural' component of practical grade exams as a separate lesson. I also help pupils prepare for the performance and composition requirements of their GCSE and 'A' Level courses and can tutor the more academic components too.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Work for theory can be emailed to me so that I can mark it and email back with comments and then discussed over Skype or FaceTime.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have over 10 years of teaching experience at primary, secondary and adult. I currently hold a woodwind teaching post at the Cottesmore Prep School in Pease Pottage and I am a flute, piano and keyboard tutor for Sussex Music School. I also have many private pupils ranging from 8 years to 60's and from beginner to diploma level.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained for my BMus (Hons) degree at Trinity College of Music studying flute with Anna Noakes. I then went on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music studying with Karen Jones and Michael Cox (principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra). I studied the piccolo with Pat Morris and Sharon Williams (principal piccolo with London Symphony Orchestra). I also studied for a year in The Netherlands with Dutch flautists, Wieke Karsten and Thies Roorda.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Musician's Union.

Marielle provides a fabulous mix of theoretical and practical teaching. Her enthusiasm for understanding the physical mechanisms of flute playing is infectious and stimulating. Alongside this she recognises the need to have fun and enjoy "just playing". I always thoroughly enjoy my lessons and wish I could do them more often!

Marielle is a fun, positive harp teacher and my daughter really enjoys her lessons. She also encourages her to explore different styles to develop her own creativity, which is a big plus.

Not having played for nearly thirty five years, I had my first lesson with Marielle in October 2014. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons and with her help and encouragement I now play in several local ensembles and I am working towards my grade 7 flute exam!

Marielle has always impressed me with her highly creative approach to flute teaching. Regular lessons with Marielle have given me a thorough grounding and I always leave with a sense of purpose and motivation. A hugely talented musician and flute player in her own right, Marielle has the rare ability to share her knowledge and enthusiasm not not just for the flute, but for music as a whole. I would not hesitate to recommend her as a teacher for children and adults alike.

Marielle has been a wonderful flute teacher for me. She is so encouraging and always finds ways to make me feel confident even when I struggle. She has a huge knowledge of music and is invaluable at helping me understand my pieces more deeply so that it enables me to play them with more confidence. Also she is methodical and breaks difficult things down into manageable tasks to build up skills. She is very patient and makes me feel like I have a talent.

Dear Marielle, I just wanted to say thank you for being such a great flute teacher. Your enthusiasm and love for music really inspired me to carry on playing the flute and I can safely say I don't think I would have joined BYO and still be playing my flute now if it wasn't for you! I will definitely take my flute to university and join the orchestra at the Royal Vet College!
