I believe that it is easier to learn by doing a task rather than reading endless text and I would approach lessons from a practical and applied standpoint. I like to provide a background to a topic and some key concepts then go into practice questions and examples. When providing training in QGIS mapping and similar subjects I have found this approach most successful.
I am a currently a masters student at Newcastle University where I study Marine Ecosystems. I graduated from Edinburgh University two years ago with a BSc in Ecological and Environmental Science. I have a strong background in ecology and biology, but am also very experienced in Maths and statistics. I am able to provide specialist training in computer programs such as RStudio and QGIS/ArcGIS. I am very friendly and have a clear and logical approach to problem solving.

MRes Marine Ecosystems and Governance
2013 – 2017 University of Edinburgh
“First Class” BSc (Hons) Ecological and Environmental Sciences
2006 – 2013 Lymm High School
“A” levels in Biology (A*), Chemistry (A), Geography (A) and Mathematics (A*).
GCSE’s in Mathematics (A*), English Language (A*) and Literature (A*), Biology (A*), Chemistry (A*), Physics, (A*) Geography (A*), French (A), Art (B).
April – August 2018
I worked with the Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines (LAMAVE) on their Puerto Princesa Whale Shark Project. I collected photographs of whale sharks, manta rays and turtles by free-diving to depths of up to 10m. The photographs were used to identify individuals in the area, with the aim of conserving these species. I produced maps of whale shark and manta ray abundances and movements using QGIS for use in Government reports and provided training in QGIS for all other team members.
January 2018 – April 2018
Research Assistant, University of Liverpool
I carried out laboratory work linked to the ATLAS and ARISE projects, including preparation of phytoplankton samples and analysis of isotope and lipid content using gas chromatography mass spectrometry.
August 2017 – November 2017
Image Analyst, APEM Ltd
I analysed aerial images of areas of proposed offshore windfarm developments to identify, measure and map the location of marine bird, mammal and shark species. The images were taken as part of aerial digital surveys and data collected fed into Environmental Impact Assessments for offshore developments. APEM Ltd software enabled the accurate measurement of the size and flight height of birds. ArcGIS was used to map the location of bird and mammal species within the target area.
Volunteer in Changing Oceans lab, University of Edinburgh
I sorted through cold-water coral samples to identify invertebrate species associated with deep-ocean reefs.
May 2017 – August 2017
Call-off Contractor, WYG, Edinburgh
I conducted ecological surveys monitoring the abundance of target organisms, particularly bat species.
May 2016 – August 2016
Volunteer Education Assistant, Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust
I worked on community outreach projects in the HWDT visitor centre, which involved delivering talks and whale-watching sessions for the general public.
2013 – 2015
Volunteer with the Land Trust
Community engagement at events at Festival Gardens, Liverpool.
Work experience at Envirolink, Birchwood, Warrington
I worked with Liaison Officers for the Irish Sea Conservation Zones project to determine areas of importance to stakeholders. I attended stakeholder interviews, workshops and conferences and mapped the areas mentioned using ArcGIS. These maps showed the overlap of important areas for local fishers and renewable energy companies.
Professional Skills and Development
“Geographic Information Systems for Marine Decision Making” module as part of my MRes;
Two-day “GIS in Ecology” authorised course entitled “An Introduction to Using QGIS in Cetacean Research”;
Proficient in R, PRIMER and NVivo statistical programs;
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Qualification;
Licence to sample freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) as granted by Scottish Natural Heritage;
Full Clean Driving Licence.
I have a sound working knowledge of R Studio, ArcGIS, QGIS and PRIMER. University courses in both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees have enhanced my ArcGIS skills and I utilise these skills as often as possible. I am confident in providing training in QGIS and have taught the volunteers of LAMAVE how to produce clear maps. I have attained my PADI Advanced Open Water Diver qualification and enjoy making the most of diving opportunities wherever I go. I am currently learning satellite imagery analysis skills to further develop and diversify my aerial survey experience. Other interests include playing the flute and piano, walking, reading and travelling.
