As a very recent graduate myself, I am only too aware of our proclivities to focus on what we already know!
This is why, from the very onset, I aim to grasp a student's strengths and weaknesses, and address the gaps in knowledge from there on out. A typical lessons consist of going through topics students identify they wish to learn/brush up on, but they are interspersed with pop quizzes to make sure they're not falling into the trap above!
Motivation is another big determinant of success, and whilst I expect students to be mature and take ownership of their responsibilities, I find reminding students of the bigger picture, or easing off the pressure yields very good results!
I have extensive experience teaching maths, science, english and economics to different levels starting from secondary to adult learners!
Usually, students tend to guide the contents of lessons, enquiring about areas they struggle in, but on other occasions I let the relevant exam board specifications guide the contents of the lesson- setting a plan of home study to ensure all material gets covered.
The lessons are interspersed with mini tests on varied topics throughout to ensure students have a good grasp of all topics including those learnt before the summer!
