About Keiley
Math has always been my favorite subject, ever since I was a kid I loved solving puzzles and that is exactly how I approach math problems. Seeing equations as games to solve helped keep my spirits up in what mostly was dull classrooms with no so engaging teachers. Helping others never fails to put a smile on my face, which is why I have 7 years of math tutoring under my belt.

Learning styles are all different, which is why it is so important to figure that our before coaching. Before anything, I like to ask my students how they remember things in their life (anything). Some people remember things musically, some through acronyms, some with a physical movement. Once I know this, it opens up pathways to new learning.
I start off my lessons with listening to my students concerns, the more detailed we can get, the more I know what methods to use. If the student has a copy of a graded worksheet or test this is very helpful to pinpoint the exact aspects we need to work on. I must stress that there is no judgement coming from my end, a poor grade on a test is just a stepping stone to improving. Growing up dyslexic, and working with kids with disabilities, I know that numbers on a test are not a reflection to somebody's intelligence.
Taking the worksheets and tests, if the student has them, I will take a blank sheet of paper and write the missed problems out and we will solve it together as I go through where things went right with their previous work, and where things derailed a bit.
Then I will come up with new problems that focus on the same lesson (same equation, different numbers), we will work on this until the student gets more and more comfortable. As we go through the new problems, I ease off on guidance, giving them time to think things through. If the student is stuck, I jump back in with the help they need.
If the student does not have a worksheet, but has specific lessons and types of equations to work on, I come up with my own worksheets and we work from there.
I take slightly different approaches with each student, but what stays consistent is once I find the moment my student is stumped, I ask them what they are thinking about, what is confusing them, what they think the next step is, and then finding approaches that make sense with what their brain naturally goes to.
