Lesson subject matter is usually student-led, but always encompasses brain warm-ups and an infusion of history to give the subject more relevance. I bring along a whiteboard and pens for both of us to use, to promote conversation and the flow of ideas. I try as far as possible to promote mental calculation, pending my students' interest and ability.
Mathematics is a skill that needs to be trained, as much as it is material that needs to be memorised. My philosophy is that everyone can be great at maths. I consider it part of my job to make my students want to be great.
Sam tutored me for the teacher training numeracy skills test. He was very patient and enthusiastic. If I didn't understand a concept he would find several ways of explaining it until we found one that was right for me and that I understood. I would thoroughly reccommend Sam as a tutor.
Samuel was my tutor during my study of A level maths. He is very friendly and comfortable to be around. If there was a concept I didn’t understand, Samuel would explain it in many different ways until I understood, and would patiently work along side through the problem so each step could be explained if needed. He also offered support outside of our sessions and was just a quick email away. Ultimately I achieved a grade higher than I was predicted, which I believe is due to his help and support, and so would highly recommend Samuel as a tutor!
I've moved a GCSE student from C to A, had an A-Level student achieving at least B's in her core modules and helped a colleague pass her PGCE maths test.
I graduated Durham writing a dissertation on Measure Theory and Fractal Geometry, and completed 13 modules at A-level with a focus on the core modules. My interests are pretty varied, however, and consider my time on stage a great indicator of my general enthusiasm and presentation skills.
