I like to have a free discussion with any person I'm teaching about what exactly is catching them up. Its completely different with every person so the most important thing is to understand the student's perspective. Common helpful methods are having a student talk through how they would go about answering questions and developing strategies to tackle questions they might feel like they can't answer.

I have also attended tutoring previously so understand the process and how to adapt the lessons for each individual student.
