About Harry

As a graduate of McGill University, my expertise lies in the subjects of Canadian, Quebec, European, and Chinese histories. Additionally, I have a strong background in religious studies, with a particular focus on the Abrahamic traditions and the methodology of studying religion. I have consistently tutored students in these subjects, helping them to deepen their understanding and improve their academic performance. As a current student finishing up my degree in a university that is renowned for its academic excellence globally, I am able to synthesize complicated knowledge into simple words for students. I have the advantage from the point of view as an active learner and a current graduate student. I share the frustrations and difficulties that many students face today, and I am able to make the challenging experience of learning more fun and relatable.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

My fascination with history began when I was a child. It's a subject that often gets overlooked because many people forget what they learned in school. For me, the "aha" moment came during middle school, when I started diving deeper into history and appreciating its relevance. Coming from China, a country with a history spanning thousands of years, I've always been drawn to the way history offers a lens to understand the present. It's a foundation for the future, and without understanding the past, we're navigating without a map.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I chose to study History and Religious Studies at McGill University, which speaks volumes about my enthusiasm. History isn't just about dates and events-it's about uncovering the stories that shape our world. I find it incredibly rewarding, like a treasure hunt, even though it can mean wading through lengthy books and academic papers. For me, learning the "why" behind historical events is endlessly fascinating, and it keeps me motivated to dig deeper.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I've been tutoring peers and younger students for years, and I find the experience mutually enriching. Teaching forces me to distill complex ideas into simpler terms, which strengthens my own understanding. It's not just about imparting knowledge-students bring their own curiosity and perspectives, which often lead to unexpected insights. I believe being a "Superprof" means fostering a collaborative learning environment where both teacher and student grow together.
  • Do you have any role models, like a teacher who inspired you?

Absolutely. During my time at Laval University's French Immersion Program, I had an inspiring professor who had been teaching French for over 50 years. Her passion for teaching was infectious, and her methods were both effective and engaging. She made learning fun, which reinforced for me that education should be enjoyable. Her belief that knowledge is a source of joy continues to inspire my own teaching philosophy.
  • What are your keys to success?

I'd say dedication and self-discipline are my core principles. As a soon-to-be graduate of McGill, I've come to appreciate how essential these qualities are for achieving success. Talent is valuable, but hard work and persistence can often achieve just as much, if not more. Success isn't about shortcuts-it's about consistent effort and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures.
