About Curtis
I am a full-time mathematics tutor with more than 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I graduated near the top of my class at MIT with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in physics. Over the years, I have helped hundreds of students strengthen their math skills, improve their grades, prepare for important examinations, and become more confident in their abilities.
My experience includes teaching mathematics in Grades 6–12, developing educational math software, and writing articles about effective strategies for helping students who struggle with math. I am also the author of a forthcoming book on problem-solving strategies for the AMC and MathCounts competitions.
I understand that even capable students can become discouraged when mathematics seems confusing. I am patient, encouraging, and committed to creating an atmosphere in which students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I explain difficult ideas clearly, often using diagrams, visual aids, and alternative approaches until the student understands.
Every lesson is carefully adapted to the student’s needs and goals. I come prepared, communicate clearly, and welcome feedback from students and parents. Whether a student needs help overcoming difficulties, improving a grade, preparing for the SAT or ACT, or pursuing advanced competition mathematics, I take the responsibility seriously and work hard to help that student succeed.

I tutor mathematics full-time and have helped hundreds of students improve their skills, grades, and confidence. Because every student learns differently, I tailor my teaching to the student’s particular strengths, difficulties, and goals.
My approach emphasizes understanding rather than memorizing a collection of rules. I break difficult ideas into manageable steps and frequently use diagrams, visual aids, real-world examples, and creative explanations. For example, I may use a balance-scale model to explain how equations are solved. I encourage students to ask questions and create a relaxed atmosphere in which they never need to feel embarrassed about making a mistake. Mistakes often help us identify the exact source of a misunderstanding and can lead to those rewarding “aha!” moments when an idea finally becomes clear.
A typical lesson begins with a brief discussion of the student’s current work and any topics causing difficulty. We may review homework, prepare for an upcoming test, or strengthen an underlying skill that is interfering with current progress. I demonstrate the relevant ideas, work through examples with the student, and then ask the student to solve problems with gradually less assistance. Before the lesson ends, I review what we accomplished and identify what the student should practice next.
I have more than 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I graduated near the top of my class at MIT with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in physics. I have taught mathematics in the classroom, developed educational math software, and written articles about effective ways to help students who struggle with math. I am also the author of a forthcoming book on problem-solving strategies for the AMC and MathCounts competitions.
My lessons are primarily for middle-school and high-school students studying pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, geometry, and related subjects. I also work with students preparing for the SAT or ACT, as well as advanced students preparing for AMC, MathCounts, and other mathematics competitions. Whether a student needs to overcome difficulties, improve a grade, prepare for an important examination, or pursue more challenging mathematics, I provide patient and individualized instruction designed to help that student reach his or her potential.
I welcome feedback from both students and parents and strive to make every lesson productive, encouraging, and responsive to the student’s needs.
