About Jean-René

Hi! I'm Jean Rene, a musician and teacher originally from Montreal. I began classical training at age 5 at the prestigious Académie de Musique Vincent-d'Indy, then spent 15+ years expanding into jazz, pop, blues, rock, funk, R&B and more. That range means I can show you how theory works across styles, not just in a textbook.

Theory is central to what I do every day. I'm currently continuing my education in music theory and arrangement at a deep level, following Dick Grove's approach to chord families, arrangement and theory, alongside Berklee's curriculum. This lets me teach and explain everything from the most basic concepts to complex harmony. I also compose and work in film scoring and music production (2+ years), sing, play piano and transverse flute, and perform live, so I know how theory shows up on stage as well as on paper.

For the past 3 years, I've taught students of all ages and levels, online and in person. I'm fully trilingual (English, French and Spanish), so we can work in the language that feels most natural to you.

My teaching philosophy
Theory shouldn't feel like memorizing rules. I want it to become a tool for self-expression, something that helps you understand the music you love and create your own with confidence. Every student is unique, so I build lessons around your goals, learning style and pace.

Whether you're a complete beginner or ready for advanced harmony, we'll start where you are. In our first few lessons, I get to know your goals, your background and how you learn best, in a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere. From there, everything is tailored to you.

Your lessons, your way
Some students prefer a structured path, building step by step from the fundamentals. Others prefer to learn theory through songs they already love, discovering why a chord progression or melody works. Both are welcome, and we can mix the two.

What we can explore together

1. Fundamentals: reading notation, rhythm, meter, intervals, scales and keys

2. Harmony and chord families: chords, progressions, and how they relate and function across classical, jazz, pop, rock and blues

3. Advanced harmony: extended and altered chords, reharmonization and more complex concepts

4. Ear training: recognizing intervals, chords and patterns so you can play by ear

5. Analyzing songs: understanding what makes your favorite music work

6. Composing and songwriting: using theory to write melodies, progressions and full pieces

7. Arranging and production: building arrangements and applying theory in DAWs such as Ableton and Logic Pro

8. Improvisation: using scales and harmony to improvise with confidence

9.Exam and school prep: support for coursework or music exams, if that's your goal
