I am a freelance Dancer and founder and Director of the Moving Upwards program. Living in and from London. For many years, I engaged with a wide range of artistically creative work and education. For the past 16 years, I primarily focused on training as a professional Jazz and Contemporary technique dancer. Over the course of my career, I've had the opportunity to explore various fields within the Arts, including; staging and directing, performing, choreographing. movement therapy, mental wellbeing and nutrition.
Through out this time I have successfully overcome a number of obstacles along my path which gives me personal experience and knowledge to share with my students via the program. I personally struggled in child hood. At just 16 years of age I was referred to a Homeless Hostel by the Social Services and became a resident to an organisation called Centrepoint. What for some would have been a prelude to a downward spiral became in my case the start of a journey towards success, achievement and strength!
Using my passion for dance as my anchor, I later went on to study a BA (hons) and finally a Masters degree in the same field.
It is my personal experience what has led me to formulate this workshop program. By sharing my life knowledge and skills in the practices of the Creative Arts and other disciplines I benefit from into the next generations, and to those who want to enhance their connections, perceptions and life itself. I have developed a practical way to use these disciplines as an empowering outlet of expression, and to help others embark on an exciting journey, into the discovery of the self!
My Training & Experience
I am currently a proud ambassador for the Youth charity organisation Centrepoint. Within this role I am often presented with a wide range of opportunities including; writing blog posts for news letters and websites for a range of issues around young people, along with various media interviews. In 2020, I was invited to share and comment on topics about youth homelessness and other issues with media channels such as; The BBC News, The Daily Times, The Big Issue, Marie Claire and many more. In November 2020, I also bravely took on the role to be the face of the national ad campaign with The Body Shop, End Youth Homelessness and Channel 4 to raise money in support of organisations that support females in housing crises across the UK.
In August 2019 I graduated from the University of East London with a Masters degree in Contemporary Performance Practices. This Masters degree provided opportunities to explore immersive theatre production, stage performance and choreography, research in the field of embodiment and improvisation, an Arts residency week with European Theatre Arts company ZU-UK and exceptional training skills in the Performing Arts industry.
I am a specialist in professional Jazz and Contemporary dance techniques, I have trained in the disciplines of Vogue, Commercial, Hip hop, Ballet, Break dancing and other somatic practices such as yoga, capoeira and contact improvisation. Career highlights (so far) include dancing on the stages of London's West End, performing for HRH The Duke of Cambridge, and learning from some of the best dance trainers London has to offer. I have multiple qualifications within the Dance Performing Arts, including a BTEC, HND, BA (Hons) and an MA.
Over the past 5 years I have also developed a deep love and practice within Yoga and meditation. Attending Fierce Grace Hot Yoga (Bikrham, Ashtanga and Yin Yoga techniques). Developing a deep sense of understanding the body and in meditation. This practice also helped aid an exploration into positive mind set, self discipline and creativity in movement.
Jamie is an amazing tutor, I got so much out of her workshop, it was truly amazing! I definitely recommend her.
Really enjoyed Dancing with Jamie, her teaching style is really engaging found myself challenged and eager to do more! Not to mention the wide range of genres she covers, I've been able to practice my contemporary dance routines but also strengthen my physical strength with Yoga exercises. We recorded some of our session so I have been able to practice in the downtime which has been amazing. Will definitely be booking more classes!
Jamie is an excellent teacher, I got a lot out of the workshop and I would definitely recommend to whoever needs it!
Jamie is a lovely tutor. Her sessions take a nice pace and she is able to adapt her teaching to the varying needs of her participants. Her lessons incorporate a complimentary mix of dance, yoga, reflection and breath work. Particularly helpful over the past year when we have all needed to relax. She is a great antidote to lockdown!
Jamie is an excellent teacher! Very patient and extremely skilful!
