Find out more about Cole

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first developed an interest in this field following my undergraduate dissertation and subsequent graduation from the university. This interest in academic dissertation writing and research naturally transferred into myself looking for further opportunities to refine and hone these skills by offering in-person tutoring in my local area. Upon coming across SuperProf, I was able to tutor students online as well.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialize in dissertation writing and research methods, and the overall idiosyncrasies and subjects that are commonly intertwined in these projects / writings. I mostly enjoy the initial setup and determining of research topics, assisting students in discovering a topic they are truly passionate and interested in. Alternatively, I do not enjoy teaching students more minimal things such as referencing styles and academic prose, as I feel these practices are slightly outdated and are followed in academia for the sake of it.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I am inspired by my parents and their drive to succeed in life
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The ability to listen to guidance just as well as you give guidance. Also I feel it is essential to understand fully the students aims and objectives within their dissertation to help them succeed.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Even when you feel you've done it all, check twice and do it again.

Often dissertations are the longest piece of work that the student has done in their lifetime, and I see from time to time that students become exhausted and make very simple mistakes that cause them to lose points that could otherwise be prevented. I believe the above anecdote relates to this well in insuring students cover all their bases when it comes to editing.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The fact that the academic field and the parameters of what is acceptable are constantly changing and developing, while others consistently stay the same. This can cause myself to be wholly experienced in some aspects of dissertation tutoring, while still learning in others, but I feel this can be a positive thing as well as its never a bad thing to keep learning.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Not only do I enjoy teaching in an academic sense, but I also enjoy teaching and coaching in an athletic sense, and am a personal and team coach within a variety of lacrosse mediums
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I think that I am a SuperProf due to the intense and granular detail I provide for the students I tutor, and despite only just recently finding SuperProf, I feel the experience I bring tutoring with students in-person in the past makes me one of the more experienced tutors on the entire site.
