About Dion
Having come from humble beginnings, I understand the challenges many students face and am committed to helping every student reach their full potential.
With 16 years' experience working with exam boards and teaching GCSE (AQA, OCR, Edexcel) and A-Level (OCR), I combine deep subject expertise with a precise understanding of what examiners are looking for. My teaching is highly personalised and strategically focused: sessions target specific gaps, refine exam technique, and build the structured thinking required for top grades. Students develop the ability to write high-level answers consistently and perform under exam conditions.
My students consistently achieve exceptional outcomes: my department was in the top 2% of schools nationally for pupil progress at GCSE level in 2022. For the past three years, my Geography department has had the highest percentage of A/A* grades at A Level among all boys' grammar schools nationwide.
In 2023, my department was awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark for academic excellence by the Geographical Association (with Centre of Excellence for Fieldwork). I enjoy keeping up-to-date with the latest educational research on teaching, learning, and memory skills, and have access to the most effective resources to support your son or daughter.
Stretching further back, In 2012 I was awarded the Jack Petchey Leader Award for my outstanding commitment to supporting and inspiring young people. In 2009 I was awarded the Tony Hoare Prize for Widening Participation in Geography at the University of Bristol, recognising my contribution to promoting inclusivity and broadening access to geographical education.
I currently work with a select range of students as a teacher and as a tutor, including those with SEND, as well as high-attaining students aiming for Grades 8-9 and A/A*.
Support is available in a variety of formats:
• Intensive revision sessions in the lead-up to exams
• Regular weekly tutoring to build confidence and boost grades
• Support for home-educated students
• Guidance with coursework and NEA
• Fieldwork support where required
Geography is a fascinating, wide-ranging discipline - and I genuinely love helping students understand it and succeed in it.

**5** My son got grade 3 in his GCSE Geography mock exam, after which we started tutions with Dion. Just with few months of Dion's tutoring he got grade 8 in his final GCSE exam! Every penny of the lessons was worth. Dion is highly professional, very well organised & punctual, very knowledgeable and knows how to pass his knowledge & experience on to the students. Dion understood my son's specific needs and provided tailor-made lessons. Dion's teaching is very exam oriented on the one hand and knowledge-feeding on the other. In short Dion's lessons tick every single tickbox. I went to Uni and I am a professional. In my own experience I would say that Dion is the best teacher I have known ever.*
**5** I couldn't be happier with the sessions. Dion has a knack for making complex concepts seem so straightforward. His teaching style is super engaging, and he is always patient and encouraging, which really boosts confidence. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject. Highly recommended!*
**5** We have been very pleased with Dion's help so far. My son needed some support with knowledge and exam technique, he found Dion to be friendly and engaging, and seemed genuinely more enthusiastic about geography after just a few lessons.
Dion had obviously spent time carefully preparing for the lessons and provided some excellent resources/notes tailored to our son's needs. Would definitely recommend him!
(NB our lessons were carried out over Zoom which has not been any problem-in fact saved on travel time)*
**5** Would thoroughly recommend. Some aspects of the new AQA Geography GCSE 9-1 specification are quite tricky but with Dion's excellent tutoring, my son is feeling much more confident about the exam.*

I have limited availability for new KS3 and KS4 students at present (AQA or OCR) and KS5 (OCR exam board in the following topics: Coasts, Changing Spaces; Making Places, Earth's Life Support Systems, Hazardous Earth, and the Non-Examined Assessment). I am able to travel to you if you are near Croydon or near my workplace in Sutton. If you are further away from these areas, online tutoring would be preferred unless booking longer sessions. I offer a free 15-minute introductory session to discuss your tutoring needs.
I continuously strive to integrate cutting-edge research into my teaching methods. Drawing from the wealth of knowledge available in the field of neuroscience, I tailor my tutoring to optimise memory retention and cognitive understanding, providing students with a learning experience that reflects the most recent advancements in our understanding of how the brain works.
Exam success is ultimately the aim, and so towards the exam season, your son or daughter will benefit from a number of exam booster sessions covering all Geography papers that students tend to appreciate. These include:
• How to tackle the longer answer questions.
• Top tips for remembering (and using) case studies.
• Use the Figure! How to give evidence from photos, maps, tables, and other sources.
• Map skills and familiar/unfamiliar fieldwork.
• Final advice from the perspective of an examiner.
I also offer Oxbridge mentoring, drawing on experience from a department with a strong history of sending students to Oxford and Cambridge in Geography and Land Economy. I provide tailored guidance on personal statements, mock interviews in the Oxbridge style, and strategies to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and academic depth - helping students approach the process with confidence and clarity.
More widely, I believe that true academic success goes beyond simply acquiring subject-specific knowledge. Hence, I strike a well-balanced approach by not only imparting subject content but also nurturing essential study skills and examination techniques. This comprehensive strategy equips students with a strong foundation that serves them well not only in their current studies but also in their lifelong learning journey.

Dion's passion for the subject, teaching experience, and knowledge of the course were all invaluable when I chose him to tutor my daughter through her Geography A Level. He quickly boosted my daughter's confidence and progress. Thanks to his tutoring, my daughter's grades skyrocketed. She achieved an A* and she is now very happy at university. I was also impressed with Dion's knowledge of the latest educational research on learning and memory skills. So much so that I booked him to do a few sessions with my son on how best to revise for his GCSEs. My son is rather lazy but Dion's impact was instant. My son became much more motivated and his exam results exceeded all expectations. Dion's manner with students is excellent and we cannot thank him enough for the positive impact he has had.
