About Joshua

I have composed avidly since beginning University studies. With a particular investment in choral composing, my pieces have been aired and recorded by the Hamilton Civic Choir as well as the Waikato University Choir. Members of both choirs have commended me for how sophisticated but enjoyable my works were to sing, and for how well I have taken care of their sung part. I have also written music for solo piano and chamber groups. This year, I have adjudicated two local composition competitions, and was also commissioned to write a piece for flute, soprano voice and piano. I also collaborated with a poet from Waikato University, who wrote an emotive poem which I set to music for soprano voice, cello and piano. I can assure you that as a theory and composition tutor, I am passionate about my craft and about sharing the things I have learned over time with others. I consider that, as a composer, I have started finding my unique voice. I can assure you that this is an ongoing endeavour. As a composer, my life experiences - the ups along with the downs - have shaped my work. I am willing to share what I have found with you to help you on your journey in the world of composition.

Kia ora. My name is Josh. I graduated from the University of Waikato in 2017 with an Honours' Degree in Piano Performance, and more recently gained an AMusTCL Diploma in music theory under Trinity College. Since my graduation, I have taught piano and music theory at a number of local schools and academies. I have been delighted to incorporate music into every single one of my occupations in the last four to five years. As an established music tutor, I consider composition and music theory lessons to work well in an online setting. I typically will teach 30- or 45-minute lessons, and am absolutely flexible with teaching a variety of ages and abilities. I pack lessons with detail, and if you bring work to me, I will never let it go without giving feedback and tips. I also love to ask you probing questions regarding your compositions to help and direct you to write your best work. In my view, a composition with clear intent and detailed notation is superior to one without these features, even if the notes and rhythms put in place are otherwise dazzling on their own! If you as a student don't have a background in music theory, but still want to compose, that is totally fine! Expect to learn both. I will often set tasks for students based on musical constraints which can, in a way, simplify the music theory content required whilst inviting you to work creatively within a confined musical space. Have you learned some music theory, but struggle with some of the topics? Worry not! I have developed a number of unique, practical tools and teaching strategies for reading music, notating rhythm and understanding tonality, which have proven game-changing to my students time and time again. I will use online notation programmes, visual tools and sheet music examples to help you learn.
