About Kelsey
I am a film composer and songwriter with a master’s degree in film scoring from the Film Scoring Academy of Europe. My work as a composer has been featured in award-nominated films, including Kind, which was nominated for a SAFTA for Best Made-for-TV Movie. I have also scored documentaries, horror films, dramas, and international ad projects, and my composition Retribution was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition, placing in the top 1% of over 14,000 entries. With a background in both classical training and professional scoring, I bring a deep understanding of music theory, storytelling, and the creative process to my teaching. My experience working in film has given me unique insight into how to write songs that are not only musically strong but also emotionally impactful and memorable. I teach songwriting because I know how powerful it can be to develop your own voice and translate your ideas into music that connects with others. My goal is to give students the tools and techniques professionals use while encouraging their individuality as artists.

The first lesson will focus on understanding your goals. Do you want to write songs for yourself or other singers? I will also assess your current level of knowledge, identify your strengths, and learn what programs or instruments you use. Most importantly, we will talk about the kind of music you want to create.
You do not need to have advanced skills on an instrument to start writing songs. A basic understanding of piano or guitar can be helpful, but it is not essential. As part of the lessons, I can teach you simple chords and progressions on either instrument and show you how to build the harmonic “backing” to your song. This way, you will have the tools to accompany your lyrics and melodies, even with only a beginner’s level of playing.
In each lesson, I will introduce a songwriting technique, break it down into practical steps, and share well-known examples to illustrate how it works. We will then discuss how you can apply it to your writing. At the end of every session, I will give you a short exercise in a specific style or format to build your practical skills.
From the second lesson onward, we will review your completed exercises together. This gives us the chance to explore your strengths and areas for growth. We will also look at the software or tools you are using, and I will guide you on how to make the most of them!
