About Jimmy
My own research is in development economics, behavioral economics, and microeconomic theory. I have rich hands-on research experience, including a three-year field experiment across 197 schools in Liberia, and I draw on that work for examples, since abstract models land better when attached to a real decision someone had to make. I have taught in English to non-native speakers throughout, and I also speak Mandarin and Cantonese.

I hold a PhD in Economics from Northwestern University, where I spent seven years doing research and teaching undergraduates. I tutor at three levels: high school economics, including AP and IB; undergraduate micro, macro, mathematical economics and development economics; and postgraduate microeconomics and development economics.
My teaching rests on one idea: a method makes sense once you have felt the limits of working without it. Most courses set out a tool in the abstract and apply it afterward. I work the other way around. We start from something you can already half-solve — supply and demand, a two-period saving decision — and push it until the familiar approach stops producing answers. The new tool then arrives as the answer to a question you are already asking, and it tends to stay.
Sessions are inquiry-based in practice, not just in principle. I ask more than I tell, and I would rather you reason aloud through a wrong answer than watch me produce a right one, because the place where your reasoning breaks is the most useful thing either of us learns in the hour. Once an idea is secure, I push it somewhere unfamiliar, since being able to recognize the same structure in a new setting is what separates understanding from recall.
I also like to work on two tracks: core problems pitched at the level you should master for exams, and harder ones that carry the same tools into less familiar territory. The harder track is never a trap — it is there to show you how far what you have learned actually reaches.
