About Juan Miguel

Trained in classical piano, with later studies in improvised music—area in which I specialise today. Extensive studies in drums and percussion. 15+ years teaching music.

Currently, I aim to simplify both my teaching and my approach, giving my students practical tools so they can study on their own as much as they want after each lesson, while also deepening their theoretical understanding.

From my personal point of view, the most important aspect of Jazz language is rhythm.

At first, my main focus is to unlock the core problem of the piano: rhythmic independence between the two hands. To achieve this, we work on left-hand grooves while developing improvisation, harmony, melodies, accompaniment, and everything there is to play with the right hand. A personal repertoire is also recommended—one that motivates and teaches at the same time.

Walking bass, tenths, strides, drops, accompaniment for singers, tumbaos, extended techniques... In my experience, rhythm, “groove,” creating “space,” active listening, and connecting with the music being played are the hardest things to learn and integrate; I place a lot of importance on these areas in my lessons.

Functional harmony. Compositional tools. How to approach jazz standards. Improvisation methods for any instrument. Model structures such as Blues and Rhythm Changes. Ear training. Rhythmic ear training. Methods for building a closer relationship with your instrument. Analysis and listening. Let’s talk music...

Location: my home in Poblenou (Passatge Cantí).
