I provide teaching that is engaging and fun as well as thorough. My lessons are always carefully planned to suit the needs of individual students, based on their age, ability, and what they are working towards. I find that interactive games and quizzes are very effective. Younger children need lots of variety and lots of breaks. Older students benefit from being given the chance to guide the lessons themselves. I often ask them to tell me what they struggle most with, or what they feel we should focus on. For students preparing for upcoming exams, I often use past papers as a resource in my lessons - to help accustom them to the format of the papers they will be taking.
I found both my undergraduate and postgraduate degree extremely rewarding. This was thanks not only to my interest in my chosen academic field, but also to the relationships I formed with my tutors. I found it hugely motivating to be given one-to-one supervision by academics who were excelling in their field, and to have the opportunity to discuss their research projects as well as my own during seminars and tutorials. As a tutor, I share with my students those aspects of literature, history, culture which fascinate me. I also encourage them to talk about their own interests, and to feel that their ideas were worth listening to. This is the role of a mentor: to truly listen to their mentee, and to help them to recognise and capitalise on their strengths.
Due to the pandemic and national lockdowns, young people across the UK have had their education repeatedly interrupted. Many students need additional support now more than ever, so as to ensure that the chaos of the past year does not impact their development and their prospects in the long term. I am motivated to offer tutoring in order to offer continuity and targeted help for those students who are struggling during this difficult time.
I have five years of experience teaching ESL, English Language and Literature, History and French to students of a wide range of ages and abilities. As part of my undergraduate degree, I spent a year abroad in Toulouse, France, teaching ESL to class groups of around thirty students at a lycée. In this role, I managed a busy timetable, and planned and produced materials for lessons focusing on conversational skills. Since graduating from Oxford, I have taught Key Stage 3, GCSE and A-Level English Literature and Language to students on a one-to-one basis, as a tutor with both IPS Tutors Ltd and Tutorspot. In 2019, I spent six months in Amman, Jordan, teaching ESL to Arabic speakers. I therefore have experience working with students who are operating in a second language, and am accustomed to ensuring that my teaching style is clear and that lessons progress at a pace which suits my students. Adapting lesson plans to fit the needs of the individual, based on their age, ability, and what they are working towards, is essential.
I have a DBS check in process, and am safeguarding trained.
