I teach rigorous foundational piano technique from the beginning, along with general musicianship. I like to incorporate teaching of general musical concepts, while encouraging creativity and imagination with the younger pupils that I teach. I also incorporate adaptations of popular music that children like to hear and play and try to stay responsive to the musical tastes of the student- while maintaining high standards in technique from beginners to advanced. I also address postural awareness and incorporate elements of the alexander technique into my teaching.
A typical lesson plan for a younger student would be as follows:
- review the colours and notes previously learnt
-rhythm practice
-review practice. Talk about technique with imaginary queues to help with memory. Talk about the musical feeling of the piece.
-Listen to an excerpt of a piece of music and talk about the impressions of the character of the music
-Make a drawing describing that character while listening
-Teach some basic patterns to create building blocks for composition. Try some improvisation together.
A typical lesson for an adult learner (intermediate):
-work through some Hanon Exercises and Scales
- review practice based on feedback from previous lesson
- listen to a recording of the piece together and share thoughts and impressions of phrasing and character. Think about what elements we enjoyed and what could be brought into the piece
- review phrase by phrase, articulation, technique, shaping of dynamics and character intended. Try to gather all the information needed to put into physical action the interior intention that the student has. This may mean breaking down each element into simpler exercises to help master each element, such as a particular articulation.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Our three children (ages 5, 6, 8) were Piano students of Ms. Roxy. We were saddened when Ms. Roxy had to move away.
Roxy is an EXCELLENT teacher. She is patient with the kids. She is very professional in setting and holding reasonable expectations for the kids. Her teaching approach is holistic, providing a deep sense of appreciation for music. The kids love her and you will too!Roxanna was fantastic with our son Clark. She was patient and helped him to always stay excited about learning piano, she is very good with kids. I would highly recommend her as a piano teacher!
