About Shawn
I have two accomplishments that I am proud of when it comes to tutoring. First, my step-daughter was held back in third grade due to math. Both of her parents hated math and were not much help. She struggled with it and therefore hated it as well. It took me about two months of working with her to change that mindset but once it did, it was a beautiful thing. She went from being in the bottom of her class to being in the top. In 4th grade she was moved to the advanced math class and in 5th grade she no longer needed my help and was in the top of the advanced math class. She went from hating school to loving it and nearly made up for that year she was held back. She graduated high school half a year early and had 2 or 3 college credit classes completed before that. Second, one of my college math instructors was an actual rocket scientist that worked for Boeing. He would direct students that were having trouble in his classes to me for extra help. One such student, he actually escorted to me while I was sitting in a common area. That instructor was impressed by my ability to understand exactly what people were struggling with and how to help them.

I have tutored students from basic math all the way through Calculus. Each approach has been different as they all had different skill levels starting out and they learned best in different ways. When I tutor someone, my first goal is to understand their feelings towards math. If it is negative then I would want a brief understanding of why. If it isn't then we go straight into trying to understand why they are having trouble with what they are currently working on. I often find Math, all the way through to Calculus, has been made out to be a boogeyman that is easily beaten through some simple understandings and confidence. I strive to teach that along with your current concepts so you can continue to succeed without me.

Details
Preferred location for meeting in person would be Deer Run library in north O'Fallon. I will not charge for meeting somewhere else if less than 10 miles from there. I am willing to drive further at an additional cost based on time and distance. I don't offer much in the way of bulk price reduction because I feel my price is already a bargain and will likely go up once reviews start coming in. The first hour free is turned on for a trial basis. I suspect it will change as well once reviews start coming in.
