About Florence
I’m Florence Grellier, a London-based pattern cutter, designer and educator with seven years of professional experience, specialising in pattern development for emerging and established designers. I studied Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins and have developed a practice that sits between technical pattern cutting, design development and creative problem-solving.
My professional work has involved working closely with new and upcoming designers, translating conceptual ideas into technically resolved garments while maintaining the integrity and intention of the original design.
Alongside my freelance practice, I am about to take up a position as a Pattern Cutting Technician at LSF and work as a Special Lecturer on a bespoke pattern-cutting project with final-year design students, focusing particularly on inclusive approaches to cutting.
My teaching methodology combines rigorous technical knowledge with a more intuitive and adaptable approach to pattern cutting. I am particularly interested in supporting designers who find conventional systems overly prescriptive, while still developing a sophisticated understanding of structure, proportion, fit and garment engineering.
I also work from my own fully equipped pattern-cutting studio in East London, with a large professional cutting table and specialist equipment.

My lessons are structured around the individual student, their level of technical understanding and the demands of their project. Sessions can range from establishing strong foundations in pattern cutting to advanced bespoke development, complex pattern manipulation and production preparation.
I teach block development, pattern manipulation, balance and proportion, fit, three-dimensional form, bespoke cutting, custom sizing, hand grading and production considerations. Where appropriate, lessons can focus on taking a design from initial concept or sketch through pattern development, toile, fitting and refinement.
My particular area of interest is pattern cutting as a design methodology. I have developed an approach that allows students to understand and apply technical principles without becoming constrained by the rigidity of conventional systems. This is especially valuable for fashion designers who need sufficient technical fluency to develop their own ideas, rather than necessarily training as specialist pattern cutters.
Lessons can be highly project-specific, whether you are developing a final-year collection, establishing an independent label, resolving a difficult garment, developing a bespoke piece or preparing patterns for production.
Teaching takes place in my East London studio, allowing for a practical, hands-on approach using professional pattern-cutting equipment and working directly with paper patterns, toiles and garments.
