About Mehrdad
Hey there! My name is Mehrdad Ghaziasgar. I'm a Computer Scientist and academic, with a passion for teaching and supervision. I'm serious about my work, but I like to be humorous in the process. I'm patient and willing to explain and re-explain concepts as needed. One of my biggest strengths as a teacher is the ability to put myself in others' shoes to try and figure out their learning needs and to adapt to those needs. I have an excellent teaching track record, having received 5 star reviews in course evaluations from almost every student I've taught over 12 years. Many students have labeled me "Their favorite lecturer". I really know my "stuff". I have a PhD in Computer Science from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), which I obtained in only a single year (2016), working completely on my own without any supervision. Previous to that, I obtained an MSc in Computer Science with distinction, and a BSc in Computer Science and Physics with highest distinction, all from UWC. I was the top student in undergrad and post-grad in my course. I'm looking to re-create my success in teaching on this platform.

Here's some pointers about my teaching style: -I like to explain concepts with numerous examples. Applying knowledge repeatedly is key to learning. Once you know how to use/apply knowledge, you know it for good. -I'm generally lively and humorous. -I have the ability to put myself in the shoes of others and see content through their eyes; this makes me capable of designing content that would answer most of the questions that my potential audience has even before they come up. -I'm able to break down and convey even the most complex topics in a simple and easy-to-digest manner. -I'm able to teach in a way that gets through to a very diverse audience. The students I've dealt with over the years have been extremely diverse, with some being quite proficient from the start, and others having no prior exposure to the field of study, and everything in between. One of my skills is to tailor-make the content and course to match the diversity and make sure everyone can benefit and grow. Some of the courses I've taught include: -Introductory programming in Python annually for several years up to and including this year, -Introductory Java (a few years ago). -Database design and implementation -Machine learning -Data warehousing Lessons in the above topics (or other topics) would usually involve me interactively presenting a set of slides, although questions/discussions are welcome at any time. I'm also an expert in thesis supervision. I've supervised scores of post-graduate students to completion, the majority graduating with distinction. The most important aspect of supervision is to provide students with the freedom to explore, while also providing ideas and guidance that would lead the project towards a direction of success. I also have expertise in document/paper writing. I've personally authored or co-authored 40 academic papers, aside from theses.

Perfect! I have had many sessions with Mehrdad and I can truly say he is a class act. He has a great passion for Machine Learning and teaching, which makes him a delight to work with. He brings humour and expertise to our sessions, making them fun and challenging at the same time. He has been very useful, both for improving my understanding of both fundamental and advanced machine learning concepts and for structuring my work plans. I am grateful for this and am excited to continue working with him in the future.
