About Alex
I am a former child adventurer; my parents both worked for the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC, and I spent a non-trivial percentage of my childhood in the field assisting scientists in the field. I have a wealth of experience in fascinating places, and as an author this has informed a great deal of my published writing.
I have been published in the Midwest Review, Olney Magazine, and Interzone Magazine; my historical sci-fi novella Andrion was published in 2023. My fiction has been longlisted for the BSFA award and nominated for the Pushcart; my poetry has been awarded an Editor's Choice by Last Stanza Magazine and an Honourable Mention in the Writers' Digest Annual Contest.
I am also an experienced academic, and have taught multiple classes at multiple levels for the University of Edinburgh and Scottish Universities International Summer School literature and creative writing programmes.

I have a student-led approach to teaching: our first session will set your writing goals and talk about your experience with writing; future sessions will be based on what you'd like to do. I'm happy to work with you on a specific piece, give foundational writing lessons over a set period, or work on exercises and improve foundational editing skills on a regular schedule.
I have been teaching writing for over a decade; first as a teacher in elementary-age children, then as a tutor and lecturer in Higher Education. In the interim I was also the co-founder and Director of The Writers' Rooms, an organisation in Iowa City, IA that served as a community hub for writers. I hold an HEA associate fellowship and have completed my thesis for a PhD in Creative Writing, and will be sitting for my defence on September 4th of this year.
As such, I am available to work with students of any age and skill level. Children and young writers are more than welcome, as are university students looking to improve their skill or mature students who wish to pick up the pen and write a novel.
I am also willing to work in-person within the Edinburgh city limits; my travel fee is roughly equivalent to bus fare.

My set price comes from years of experience, hard work, and several degrees in writing and literature--but it's up to you to decide whether it's worth it! The first 30-minute session allows us to discuss your goals, how I can help you achieve them, and whether or not you'd like to make the investment.
