About Borislav

My name is Borislav, but you could just call me Boris. I recently completed the first year of my PhD in the department of International Relations at the University of St Andrews. As I want to pursue an academic career I am looking to get some extra experience in tutoring and earn some money on the side to support my studies.

I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Edinburgh Napier University. The year after that I completed my MLitt in International Political Theory at the University of St Andrews and I am currently working on a Political Theory doctorate project at the same institution. My research interests are in: Political Theory and Philosophy, Critical Theory, Psychoanalysis, Political Ontology, Contemporary Political Thought (post-Nietzsche), Marxism and post-Marxism, and post-structuralism.

Based on my research interests and expertise I could best help you for your theory classes. Nonetheless, I have very broad knowledge in the fields of the Humanities and Social Sciences and fair tutoring experience in IR and politics so I am confident that I could help you with any undergraduate degree level module within those disciplines. I can guide you over difficult for you material or we can also go over your written work. We can work to polish your research proposals if you want to go into further studies and if not, I could provide you with feedback and help on your final year research project.

Being a tutor in the Humanities and Social Sciences is a difficult task. This is because most of the disciplines within the fields are not natural sciences and in many cases social phenomena could be explained in different ways and using various theories. The first step towards improvement is understanding that there is no right nor wrong interpretation of content.

Hence, a good tutor should draw a line between imposing knowledge and facilitating (critical)thinking and this is what I will aim to achieve during our sessions. Critical thinking is the most important skill that universities aim to develop in their students and your grades depend on the level of critical analysis of the material that you engage with. A lot of students struggle with that as the University level education requires significantly more engagement with critical thinking from them than what they are used to in High School.

If you struggle with lecture material I will attempt to answer your questions but most importantly we will work towards going beyond the level of description by focusing on critical analysis and evaluation. If you want me to go over your written work, we will do so on several levels—stylistically (writing style, argument presentation and structure); we will evaluate the content and how it could be supplemented; and most importantly the balance between description and critical analysis.
