About Andrew
I have always had a passion for teaching and sharing knowledge. From helping friends understand difficult concepts in revision sessions before school or undergraduate exams; then guiding undergraduate students through tutorials and laboratory practicals as part of my PhD programme; to mentoring postgraduate students as the senior postdoctoral researcher in our lab group; and now as a father of two young children working their way through primary school. At each stage of my life I have been driven to achieve that “penny drop” moment in the person I’m teaching. That connection then tells me that they haven't just simply recollected a fact. My aim is that they have, instead, understood the foundational principles of the question, and have thus arrived at an answer, rather than solely recalling one. I truly believe that, given the right environment and teaching style, anyone can learn anything. It is my job to find the way in which the student truly learns, rather than just purely remembers. I feel this is the kind of knowledge that lasts, as well as being a much more enjoyable process for both student and teacher. Honestly, in any case I wouldn’t want to do it any other way!

It is important to me to find out how a particular student learns, and what gets them interested in a subject. From there I will then give the student a strong understanding of the basics, which they can then build from. Ultimately, in my experience it is essential that the student doesn't just recall the correct answer, but that they can tell me how they got there. I teach maths and science from KS2 to GCSE, online. In-person tutoring is possible if the student is local to Loughton. As part of my academic career I’ve always been drawn to any opportunity to teach. I love sharing knowledge about the subjects I’m passionate about. Consequently I've taught maths and science to many people: from children in a nursery and school outreach setting; to undergraduates in tutorials; to medical conference attendees in an epidemic simulation; to laypeople in a lecture on the biology of zombie parasites! Additionally, as part of my PhD I completed the Demonstrators’ Academic Development Programme (DADP). This was essentially a module from the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP), the teaching qualification for university lecturers. I passed with distinction.

Dr Andrew was a colleague of mine in London. In that time he was working towards his PhD and was engaged in a lot of tutoring and teaching support (both practical and theoretical). He is an excellent scientist, teacher and communicator. I remember attending a public lecture by him at the Pathology Museum, in which he discussed parisitology for a non-expert audience who enjoyed it immensely. He has an exceptional talent for explaining complex scientific ideas in creative and accessible ways, for example using a role play game to teach about how humans fight infections pathogens. He is an excellent tutor.
Dr ChristopherAndrew is a dedicated, respectful, highly intelligent, optimistic, patient person- all qualities one looks for in the perfect tutor. He has a passion for explaining a range of topics in depth, at the pace of the listener. Most importantly, he loves to make people laugh- which makes the learning journey fun!
Andrew is a great tutor! He’s patient, knowledgeable and makes learning fun. Thanks Andrew!
