About Alex
I am a PhD candidate at the University of Bristol, researching computer architecture in the High-Performance Computing research group. In addition to my studies I am involved in the teaching of undergraduate and master's degree modules in computer architecture, programming languages, and software engineering. Prior to this, I was an intellectual-property lawyer for seven years, focusing on pharmaceutical patents. And before that, I completed an MChem at the University of Oxford. The fourth year of my chemistry degree was a research year, in which I developed a novel enzyme catalysis for the hydrogenation of lactones.

The focus of my lessons is to develop an understanding of and around a subject, rather than pursuing the rote learning of it. This is achieved through individually-tailored and discussion-driven lessons. I take only a couple of students at a time, so am able to work with my students to understand how they best learn. Through my experiences teaching university modules and presenting arguments as a lawyer, I am good at breaking down difficult concepts in ways that are quickly-digestible. I do in-person lessons only, as I find it more difficult to concentrate and absorb new ideas through online lessons. My lessons are between one and two hours long. My students are typically studying towards GCSEs or A-levels.
