About Cheryl

I have a Masters of Education and a Bachelors in Psychology from Widener University and am certified to teach grades K-6th. I have been teaching for the School District of Philadelphia for 25 years and am working toward a Master's plus 30 credits as part of my educational journey. My current coursework includes connecting diversity, equity, and inclusion with social-emotional skills to help students grow as members of communities.

About the lesson

Lessons for kindergarten to second-grade students enhance their reading skills. I focus on individualized reading, helping students read words in isolation quickly and accurately. I emphasize decoding strategies such as segmentation, blending, and chunking to make learning more engaging and effective. This approach supports students as they grow as readers.

At the start of each session, we set clear goals and discuss what we will be working on. Students understand the direction of the lesson and what they can expect to learn.

We review previously learned skills to make students feel accomplished and gradually move to more challenging skills.

We immediately take a feedback break after they make a mistake, focusing on the positive aspects of their learning journey. This positive reinforcement keeps them encouraged and motivated.

As the session concludes, we discuss two praises and a push, providing positive reinforcement and encouragement to the students.

- 1 area to practice and revisit for the next session.
