About Lillian
I am a dedicated tutor specializing in English, reading comprehension, writing, and speech preparation. As a political science student at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, I have extensive experience with academic writing, critical reading, and persuasive speaking skills that are essential for success across many disciplines.
My academic background has strengthened my ability to analyze complex texts, construct clear and well-supported arguments, and communicate ideas confidently in both written and spoken form. In addition, my leadership experience has reinforced my professionalism, organization, and ability to guide others with clarity and patience. These experiences have helped me develop strong communication and teaching skills that translate directly into effective tutoring.
I approach tutoring with a structured yet supportive style, tailoring each session to the student’s specific goals and academic level. I emphasize understanding, confidence, and skill development so students not only improve their current work, but also build lasting academic tools.
I take pride in maintaining a respectful, encouraging learning environment where students feel supported and motivated. My goal is to help students gain confidence in their abilities, improve their performance, and develop strong communication skills they can rely on long after our sessions end.

My name is Lillian, and my approach to tutoring is centered on clarity, confidence, and connection. I believe strong reading, writing, and speaking skills aren’t just about talent—they’re about understanding how language works and learning how to use it with purpose.
Teaching method & techniques:
I use a student-centered, skills-based approach. I break down complex concepts into simple, manageable steps and explain why something works, not just what to do. I focus on:
- Close reading and comprehension strategies
- Clear structure in writing (thesis, organization, evidence, and transitions)
- Revision techniques that strengthen ideas rather than just fixing grammar
- Speech preparation through outlining, practice, and confidence-building
I adapt my teaching style to each student’s learning pace and goals, whether they need extra support or want to refine advanced skills.
A typical lesson plan:
A typical lesson begins with a short check-in to identify what the student is working on and where they feel stuck. From there, we:
- Review key concepts or assignment requirements
- Work through examples together (texts, prompts, or drafts)
- Practice applying the skill independently with guidance
- End with clear takeaways and next steps the student can use on their own
- Lessons are interactive and practical, with a strong emphasis on real assignments and improvement over time.
What sets me apart as a tutor:
What sets me apart is my focus on confidence and communication. I aim to help students not only improve their work, but also feel more comfortable expressing ideas out loud and on paper. I create a supportive, judgment-free environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. I also prioritize organization, preparation, and accountability so students leave sessions feeling capable and prepared.
Who the lessons are for:
My lessons are designed for:
- Middle school and high school students
- Introductory college-level English, writing, and speech courses
- Students preparing for essays, presentations, speeches, or reading comprehension assignments
- Students who want to strengthen fundamentals or polish advanced skills
I tailor each session to the student’s class, level, and specific goals to ensure meaningful progress.
