I believe that learning should be self driven and that an effective teacher is one that doesn't simply teach students a subject but instead teaches students how to help themselves and to study and motivate themselves effectively. I believe that learning styles can play a massive part in both the enjoyment od a subject as well as the success in a subject so would carefully tailor each tutoring session to the student to ensure the maximum benefit and engagement for each student. Whether it be solving equations to essay writing, I do believe that practice makes perfect! However, practice doesn't have to mean the generic repetition of essay writing or equation solving that sends students to sleep in 2 minutes, practice can also mean short, quick, effective activities that improve aspects of learning whilst keeping students engaged! In conclusion, I want students to help themselves with their learning but I also want students to have fun with their learning too, and to not feel that learning is a chore!
I am a first year undergrad student at the University of York studying Politics and International Relations. I recently finished my A Levels and studied History, Geography and English Literature all of which, although challenging, I enjoyed thoroughly. I can completely understand and relate to the struggles and frustrations of studying humanities subjects in secondary education and I feel that my passion for both English and History, combined with my own experience with studying both subjects means that I am able to relate to and help students on a different level. I also enjoyed Maths at GCSE however chose not to take this on to higher education, however I would love to be able to help other students enjoy and simplify a subject that many can find challenging and often-times intimidating.
