About Mangalya
I am a popper—every beat is a pulse that runs through my body, and every hit is an expression of rhythm and soul. Popping isn’t just a dance style to me; it’s a language I speak without words, where each muscle contraction tells a story. From the sharp snaps of my arms to the fluid waves that ripple through my fingers, I move with precision, control, and style. The music drives me, but it's my creativity and energy that bring the movement to life. Whether I’m isolating, gliding, or hitting, I carry the essence of funk, street culture, and raw expression in every step. This isn’t just dance—it’s who I am.

Popping is a dynamic street dance style that emphasises quick muscle contractions, known as “hits” or “pops,” synchronised with music beats. In this beginner lesson, start by warming up with basic stretches and light cardio to loosen your body and improve flexibility. Begin with the foundational movement: the pop. Stand upright with your knees slightly bent and your arms relaxed. As the beat hits, sharply contract your muscles—especially in the arms, legs, and torso—to create a jolting effect, then quickly relax. Practise this to a slow beat, focusing on isolating the muscle group you're popping. Next, learn the arm wave: raise one arm and ripple movement through your fingers, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, making it look like a wave is travelling through your limb. Combine this with pops at the start or end for emphasis. Introduce the robot style by moving stiffly with deliberate pauses, mimicking mechanical motion. Practise transitions between moves, staying on rhythm and using your body to express the music. Encourage repetition and freestyle practice to develop muscle memory and personal style. Remember, popping is as much about musicality and creativity as it is about technique, so have fun and let the music guide you.
