About Chi Fei
I am a student taking a gap year following my A-Levels, with experience in the toughest maths exams such as the UKMT, MAT, STEP and AEA. I currently work as a tutor at the London academy of excellence.

Having just finished my A-Levels in the summer of 2019, all of the pitfalls that come with maths exams are still fresh in mind. I usually email my students before lessons to discuss a specific topic they are having trouble with, to which I hand pick the finest questions to both test and push the understanding of my students.
Next, I guide my students through a question, showing them how I would tackle it, while explaining my reasoning for each step, not unlike what is required in a real exam. During this time, I aim to both teach my methods and straighten out any misunderstandings my students have with topics, answering any questions they might have while I am talking through my work.
Then, I give my students a similar question to work through, to see they have retained the information. I will also occasionally ask them to verbally explain each step to me, as this is the best way to consolidate a student's own understanding, while also checking they are following a logical line of reasoning.
Maths and further maths A-Levels have an abundance of problem solving, which is why I recognise the need to give my students a set of questions to work through on their own, and only provide a few hints, once they are confident enough to do so. This is because problem solving skills can only be developed by solving the problems themselves. Mathematics is just mental gymnastics - it can't be practised by seeing, only by doing. I strongly believe it is better for a student to struggle for 5 mins and figure out the way around a question themselves, than for a teacher to give them the answer straight away with no thought from the student once they come across a barrier.

I am the Head of Maths at London Academy of Excellence. Chi Fei is an excellent mathematician who achieved A* in Further Maths A Level. He has since worked in the school for four months helping current students in small intervention groups. His explanations are clear and concise and his resources are always excellent. Student feedback has been really positive with many students asking for more sessions.
