About Raja

I am a motivated biotechnology graduate with a strong passion for science education and environmental sustainability. Over the years, I have gained hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques (such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA extraction) and have taught these in both laboratory and classroom settings. As a tutor, I’ve developed the ability to adapt my teaching approach to suit individual learning styles, helping students improve their understanding and achieve better results. I thrive on explaining complex scientific ideas in simple, engaging ways, using visual aids, experiments, and tailored feedback. I am reliable, patient, and committed to fostering curiosity and confidence in learners. Beyond the lab, I am deeply interested in environmental issues and sustainable practices, and I aim to bring that perspective into my educational work. If appointed, I will bring my scientific expertise, enthusiasm for hands-on learning, and dedication to student success to support both teachers and pupils in achieving high standards.

Topics & Content In my biotechnology lessons I typically include: Molecular biology fundamentals: DNA/RNA structure, replication, transcription, translation, and gene expression. Laboratory techniques: DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme work. Microbiology and cell culture: handling microbes, sterilisation, growth curves, interpreting cell behaviour. Biotechnology applications: genetic engineering (GMOs), CRISPR, biofuels, fermentation, industrial/medical uses. Ethics, safety, and environmental implications: biosafety, bioethics, responsible use, impacts of biotech on environment and health. Project-based learning: small group or individual projects applying techniques to real problems (e.g. water treatment, plant modification, etc.). Teaching Methods & Skills Used Hands-on practicals: Where possible, students carry out experiments themselves (or in small groups), because doing the work aids understanding more than just reading about it. Demonstrations: For complex or resource-intensive techniques, I demonstrate and then guide students to try parts themselves. Visual aids, diagrams, animations: To help students grasp abstract molecular concepts (e.g. how PCR works, how transcription works). Scaffolded learning: Starting with theory, then showing simple experiments, then more complex variations. Also giving revision/mocks. Differentiation: Adapting tasks for different ability levels, giving extra support or challenge as needed. Safety & lab protocol training: Ensuring all students understand and follow safety rules, proper handling of equipment, correct setup. Assessment & feedback: Quizzes, practical reports, project evaluations; using the results to adjust teaching. Skills / Experience Gained Relevant to HLTA Role Strong ability to plan lessons that integrate both theory and practical work. Experience supervising practical experiments — maintaining safety, managing equipment, behaviour in lab settings. Capability to explain complex scientific concepts in simpler forms, using visual or hands-on methods. Experience assessing student work and giving feedback to help them improve. Managing groups of students in lab settings, guiding them through experiments, helping them when they get stuck. Organising resources, preparing practical materials, ensuring smooth lesson flow.
